The church’s ministry of Puertas Abiertas (Open Doors)
Our church building is situated in a residential part of Huércal-Overa. The area is home to many low-income families who were becoming increasingly adversely affected when the Covid-19 crisis hit. Many lost part-time and seasonal work and found themselves with no or a vastly reduced income. As a church we felt that we had to do something to help, and so Puertas Abiertas was started. We began by giving out a few bags of basic dried and tinned food, as well as running a take-what-you-need second-hand clothes “market”.
We help anyone who comes to us, regardless of nationality, ethnicity and/or religious belief, asking only that they are registered on the Padrón in Huércal-Overa. As word got round, the ministry began to grow, and we currently give out around 40-45 bags a week, each one representing a family we support. We have at least 65 families on our books, and only see this number increasing.
The Town hall in Huércal-Overa have recognised our ministry and have given us a small warehouse from which we now distribute our food. it is situated behind the Centro de Mujeres.
As we seek to continue what we do, we are so grateful for the help and co-operation of the Ayuntamiento de Huércal-Overa as well as local supermarkets. As a small congregation we cannot support this vital ministry without external help. That said, we are greatly enjoying working with the community, and have been deeply touched by the ex-pats who have expressed a real desire to help those in need by working with us. Thank you!
